For the first time in the city's history, Boston, Massachusetts, hosted a major political party's National Convention. Beating out Miami, Detroit, and New York City, Boston gained the right to host the 44th Democratic National Election in the year 2004.

Spanning from July 26th to July 29th, the event drew some 35,000 people over the duration, counting over 4,000 delegates and 15,000 journalists. All this was to be held in the Fleet Center arena, now known as the TD Garden, famous for hosting the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins sports teams. The amount offered by Boston to secure the privilege as hosing location was in the proximity of 50 million dollars. This was the second highest compensation package offered to the Democratic Party, the highest being New York with $72, and the lesser amounts being $50 million and $40 million by Detroit and Miami, respectively. Still, considering the windfall of over $150 million brought by contracts to businesses, hotels being booked, etc-not to mention the historical gain for Boston, the investment was definitely a benefit of the city.

On the ballot, the list of candidates was quite crowded. Former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry was the favorite for the presidential nomination, while former Senator John Edwards was expected to take the vice presidential nomination. Other names once in the race for the party nomination included Dean Howard, Dennis Kucinich, Wesley Clark, and Rev. Alfred 'Al' C. Sharpton. Kerry and Edwards were far ahead in popularity, having previously amassed a popular vote count of approximately 10 and 3 million, respectively. This was far beyond the others who did not even breach the 1 million vote barrier.

Of the scheduled speakers, some of the more well-known personalities were names such as former presidents Bill Clinton and James 'Jimmy' Carter, former Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (NY), former Vice President Al Gore, and former Senator Ted Kennedy (MA). One of the surprising speakers was former Illinois Senator Barack Obama, whose appearance and keynote speech helped propel him to the presidency in the 2008 elections.

The conference itself did not have an overall theme per se, but the theme for each day was as follows:

Monday, 'Kerry-Edwards Plan for Americas Future'

Tuesday, 'A Lifetime of Strength and Service'

Wednesday, 'A Stronger More Secure America'

Thursday, 'Stronger at Home, Respected in the World'

Considering the Democrat's conference was the first convention to be held since the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, and in keeping with the daily session themes, extra security precautions were taken. Approximately $50 million was allotted to a top-notch security arrangement. Police and military personnel alike guarded the area, some in police boats and helicopters. Police implemented bomb sniffing dogs as well, but even so, authorities still removed trash receptacles, mailboxes, and even welding manholes shut as a preventative measure. There were also seven foot tall barricades, and plenty of razor wire fencing and a 'free speech zone' which enclosed protesters who opted to protest freely (though non-violently).

As it turned out, authorities did not have as much to be concerned about as initially estimated. While the security unit had anticipated making as many as 2,000 arrests, and many protesters had shown up, the actual number of arrests reported was not that shocking. Thousands of protesters representing groups such as American Friends Service Committee, A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, and a Vietnam Veterans protested, but only two arrests had been reported by the final day, according to Bloomberg News. On a related note, despite a number of opponents, Kerry had nothing to worry about either. No surprises by his opponents insured that the convention culminated smoothly in his nomination for presidency.
